Fall 2024 Natural Law Jurisprudence Seminars at Harvard & Notre Dame Law Schools
Posted on Dec 16 2024

This fall, we witnessed the further flourishing of our Natural Law Jurisprudence Seminars at Law Schools. With gatherings of eager students at Notre Dame Law School and Harvard Law School, two institutions where we have hosted seminars in the past, our program has truly reached a new, exciting phase. No longer are we only bringing our seminars to schools for the first time, but we are also cementing our teaching on key campuses that feature students who seek our unique approach to law.

At Harvard, last visited in 2018, JWI's Gerry Bradley and Garrett Snedeker led students in five seminars on the first principles of moral and legal judgment over two days. At Notre Dame, last visited in 2022, Professors Hadley Arkes and Philip Muñoz led students in four seminars on similar themes. Besides the formal seminars, both weekend-long events provided ample time for relationship-building and networking, where students were able to engage with one another and our own scholars.

We were quite impressed by the intellectual curiosity of the students, who displayed a genuine eagerness to engage with the Natural Law, often for the first time. It is clear: today's future lawyers are seeking more from their legal education than what the academy is providing, and that is why the James Wilson Institute exists.

For over a decade, JWI has been at the forefront of educating the next generation of leaders, scholars, and public servants on the foundational principles of Natural Law and their profound influence on our legal and political systems. Our Law School Seminars are a critical part of this mission.

Our Law School Seminars offer an introduction to the moral and philosophical principles that form the bedrock of our legal and political systems. Since most of the students attending these seminars have received little to no education in the Natural Law in law school or in their undergraduate education, these seminars fill a glaring hole in their education. We have seen firsthand the impact that these seminars have on participants, inspiring them to think more deeply about the moral foundations of law and governance. One Harvard attendee told us that "I learned more about Constitutional Law with the James Wilson Institute than I did in my entire semester-length course."

Over the past year, interest in these Law School Seminars has grown exponentially. Only last year, we were visiting just one school each semester. Today, we have received requests for our seminar from students at a dozen premiere law schools across the country. What encourages us is that the students' interest is organic; they seek to bring our teaching to them.
