Memories of Michael Uhlmann: An Evening's Celebration
By The James Wilson Institute • Posted on Jul 2 2026

The James Wilson Institute hosted an evening for friends, colleagues, and students of Michael Uhlmann, our recently passed friend and JWI Senior Scholar, to share stories and memories of the man. The evening was filled with tales of Uhlmann's wit, humor, warmth, and knowledge.

Prof. Hadley Arkes, JWI Founder and Director, led the discussion, joined by friends including, Justice Clarence Thomas, Ambassador Boyden Gray, Dr. Charles Kesler, Ryan Williams of the Claremont Institute, and Matthew Glover.

In addition to the stories told by those in the room, Larry Arnn sent us this remembrance of Michael Uhlmann to be shared:

Dr. Larry P. Arnn (via email): "When I finally met Mike, I was not ready for the sense of humor and good will that possessed his whole being. His tongue was quick, but not as quick as his eyes. They told you that he was already enjoying something he was about to say."

Below you can find a photo gallery of the evening, and more photos are on our Facebook page here. A video recording of the evening can be found here.
